Goal Scoring

BTTS (Both Teams to Score) is one of the most popular prediction markets in football, offering a straightforward proposition: will both teams score at least one goal in the match? This binary outcome — Yes or No — might seem simple, but accurate BTTS prediction requires sophisticated analysis of both teams' offensive capabilities and defensive vulnerabilities.

How AI Predicts BTTS Outcomes

Our BTTS predictions are derived from the same Poisson-based expected goals model that powers our Over/Under predictions, but with a different mathematical focus. Instead of calculating total goal probabilities, the BTTS model focuses on each team's individual probability of scoring at least one goal. If Team A has an 80% chance of scoring and Team B has a 65% chance, the BTTS "Yes" probability is approximately 0.80 × 0.65 = 52%.

However, this simple multiplication assumes independence between the two teams' scoring, which isn't entirely accurate. When one team scores, it can change the dynamics of the match — the trailing team may adopt more attacking tactics, increasing their scoring probability. Our models incorporate a correlation factor that adjusts for these inter-dependencies.

Key Factors in BTTS Predictions

Scoring Consistency

The most important BTTS predictor is each team's scoring consistency — how often they manage to score at least one goal per match. A team that scores in 85% of their matches is significantly more likely to score in any given fixture than one that scores in only 60% of matches. We track this metric separately for home and away matches, as many teams show marked differences in their scoring rates between venues.

Defensive Vulnerability

Equally important is how often each team concedes at least one goal. A team with the league's best defense, conceding in only 50% of matches, presents a very different BTTS proposition than a team that concedes in 90% of matches. The combination of both teams' scoring consistency and their opponents' defensive vulnerability creates the foundation of our BTTS probability estimates.

Head-to-Head BTTS History

Some pairings consistently produce BTTS "Yes" results, while others tend toward shutouts. Derby matches, for instance, often see both teams score due to the heightened intensity and motivation. Our models track the BTTS hit rate for historical head-to-head matchups and incorporate this as a predictive feature.

League-Specific BTTS Patterns

BTTS rates vary significantly by league. The Bundesliga typically has the highest BTTS "Yes" rate among major European leagues (around 55-58%), reflecting its high-scoring, attacking culture. The Premier League follows closely (approximately 52-55%). Serie A and Ligue 1 tend to have lower BTTS rates (around 48-52%), consistent with their more defensive tactical tendencies. Our models calibrate BTTS expectations to league-specific baselines.

When BTTS Predictions Are Most Reliable

Our AI's BTTS predictions tend to be most reliable in the following scenarios: matches between two teams with high scoring consistency (both scoring in 75%+ of matches), matches between teams with poor defensive records (both conceding in 80%+ of matches), and head-to-head fixtures with a strong historical BTTS pattern. Conversely, BTTS predictions are least reliable when one team has highly variable scoring — teams that alternate between scoring freely and being shut out make BTTS prediction particularly challenging.
