The absence of a key player through injury or suspension can dramatically shift match probabilities. At 1X2.TV, our AI models incorporate player availability data to produce more accurate predictions, but the impact of a missing player varies enormously depending on who the player is, what position they play, and the quality of their replacement.
Quantifying Player Impact
We maintain individual player impact ratings derived from each player's contribution to their team's performance metrics. These ratings combine multiple factors: goals and assists, xG involvement, defensive actions, passing network centrality, and the team's overall performance differential with and without the player. Some players — like the main creative midfielder or a dominant center-back — have outsized impact ratings because they are harder to replace like-for-like.
Position-Specific Absence Effects
Goalkeepers
The gap between a starting goalkeeper and their backup is often the largest quality differential in any squad position. Goalkeeper absences tend to impact Under/Over and BTTS probabilities more than 1X2 outcomes.
Central Defenders
Missing a key center-back increases goals conceded expectations significantly. Our models show that the absence of a first-choice center-back partnership increases xG against by approximately 0.3 per match on average.
Midfield Creators
The absence of a team's primary playmaker reduces chance creation quality and often results in more direct, less effective attacking play. This impacts both xGF and overall match quality.
Strikers
Losing a top scorer is impactful but often less match-decisive than losing a key midfielder or defender, because goals are distributed more evenly across the team than creative responsibility.
How Our Models Process Absence Data
When confirmed lineup or squad information indicates a key player absence, our models adjust the team's predicted performance by the player's individual impact rating. This adjustment propagates through all prediction markets — 1X2, Over/Under, BTTS, and Asian Handicap.
Accessing Player Impact Data
1X2.TV updates predictions when significant player absence information becomes available, typically in the 24 hours before kickoff when team news is confirmed.
