Match Minutes

Understanding when goals are most likely to be scored within a match is valuable for multiple prediction markets, from first goalscorer timing to live Over/Under predictions. Our AI models at 1X2.TV analyze minute-by-minute goal distributions across all major leagues to identify consistent scoring patterns.

Overall Goal Distribution by Half

Second halves consistently produce more goals than first halves across all major leagues, typically by a ratio of approximately 55:45. This pattern is driven by several factors: physical fatigue reducing defensive concentration, tactical changes (attacking substitutions), and the psychological urgency created by time running out — particularly for losing teams.

First Goal Timing

The median time for the first goal in a football match is approximately the 30th minute, meaning half of all matches have their first goal before the half-hour mark. The probability of a first goal increases gradually from kickoff, peaks around 25-35 minutes, and then spikes again in first-half stoppage time. Our models use these distributions for first goalscorer timing predictions.

The 75th-Minute Surge

Goal probability increases significantly in the final 15 minutes of matches, with the 75-90 minute window producing approximately 25% of all goals. This is the period where fatigue is highest, tactical substitutions have created fresh mismatches, and trailing teams commit extra players forward. The 90+ stoppage time period shows the highest per-minute goal rate of any phase.

Goalless at Half-Time: What Happens Next?

Matches that are goalless at half-time have a 55% probability of producing at least one second-half goal. This figure is useful for in-play Over 0.5 goals predictions at half-time. If both teams are still goalless at the 60th minute, the remaining-match goal probability concentrates even more heavily in the final 30 minutes.

Application to Predictions

These timing patterns are integrated into our in-play prediction models on 1X2.TV and inform pre-match predictions for timing-sensitive markets.
