The impact of a first-choice goalkeeper's absence is among the most significant individual player effects in football. Backup goalkeepers are typically significantly weaker than first-choice keepers, creating a quality drop that affects both direct shot-stopping and team defensive organization (as players adjust to a less familiar presence behind them). Our models apply substantial team strength adjustments when first-choice goalkeepers are unavailable, with the magnitude determined by the quality gap between the first and second choice.
